We sought to understand the meaning people attach to te taiao (the environment), ngahere (forest), and taonga (treasured) species, to explore people’s connection and how this could be fostered and supported, to empower them to make a difference now and in the future so te taiao, ngahere, and taonga species flourish.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About Us | Papamuri - Our Focus</image:title>
<image:caption>Ka whāngaia, ka tipu, ka puāwai Nurture, grow, blossom This whakataukī captures the essence of Mobilising for Action that sought to nurture people to grow and blossom to protect taonga species across Aotearoa / New Zealand. When people are mobilised to protect taonga species, these will be nurtured, and continue to grow and blossom. Mobilising for Action focused on the human dimensions of ngahere/forest health and more specifically where the ngahere is affected by, or threatened by kauri dieback and myrtle rust. Mobilising for Action developed and supported research that explored the connections between people and the ngahere, people and te taiao (the environment) and people and taonga species such as kauri and pohutukawa.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About Us | Papamuri - Ngā Rākau Taketake</image:title>
<image:caption>Mobilising for Action was one of seven research themes within the Ngā Rākau Taketake – Saving our Iconic Trees programme developed and funded by the Biological Heritage National Science Challenge. These research themes focused on accelerating kauri dieback and myrtle rust research and management and contributed specifically to research to understand, support, engage and empower New Zealanders in their efforts to save the ngahere from current and future biological threats.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About Us | Papamuri - Waka Hourua</image:title>
<image:caption>Mobilising for Action drew on the analogy of a waka hourua double-hulled canoe navigating through an ocean. Each hull of the canoe represents a body of knowledge that informed the research. One hull represents Indigenous knowledges, as epitomised by mātauranga Māori, and the other hull represents Western science perspectives. The ocean we navigate is te taiao – our environment. The waka hourua was a fitting conceptual framework to underpin the research undertaken by Mobilising for Action.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Our Research | Rangahau - Research Goals</image:title>
<image:caption>Three critical research goals guided Mobilising for Action’s research framework for the three years of the programme: 2020-21: Whakamārama – To Understand What meaning do people attach to te taiao, ngahere, and taonga species? 2021-22: Whakapiri - To Engage How can people’s connection to te taiao, ngahere, and taonga species be fostered and supported now and in the future? 2022-2023 Whakamana - To Empower How can people be empowered to make a difference now and in the future, to ensure te taiao, ngahere, and taonga species flourish? While these research goals were identified as discrete annual goals, each is mutually constitutive and cannot be disentangled from the others. Therefore: whakamārama drives whakapiri and whakamana whakapiri drives whakamārama and whakamana, whakamana drives whakamārama and whakapiri.</image:caption>

<image:caption>From July 2020 to June 2024, Mobilising for Action funded a range of research projects that contributed to the research goals. Some of our researchers had been engaged in biosecurity social research for many years, while others in the team new to kauri dieback and myrtle rust brought new perspectives that may not yet have been considered. We embraced postgraduate researchers in the team by offering funded Masters research opportunities, and summer internships for small scale projects within the larger research projects. Additionally, we supported early career researchers and encouraged the employment of postgraduate students as research assistants. Mobilising for Action’s research supported, engaged and empowered communities, many of which were partners with project researchers to form a wider community of interest.</image:caption>

<image:caption>To enhance understandings about the meaning and value Māori give to: te taiao, ngahere and taonga species, as well as the influence of a range of factors on those associative meanings and values. Using pūrākau as methodology, this project delineates the layers of meaning rōpū give to taiao, ngahere and taonga species to truly appreciate: what is at risk if myrtle rust continues to spread to currently unaffected areas of cultural importance, and the underlying drivers, enablers and disablers of engagement with the well-being of taonga species, ngahere and te taiao, and to understand the aetiology of myrtle rust from a Western science and Kaupapa Māori perspective, and co-design public awareness materials that speak to both perspectives.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Haylee - Newborn Life: This photo portrays new life forms. Nature is important for animals/humans to live and survive. If nature didn’t exist neither would we. To keep our ngahere safe and pest free we need to stay on the tracks, pick up littered rubbish and set pest traps. Trees are very fragile so please take good care of them. They want to offer peace so we should do the same.</image:caption>
